2026 Dragonfly season

2026 Dragonfly season

The 2026 dragonfly season has finally arrived. It’s been a slightly frustrating wait with a warm start followed by bouts of heavy rain – but I’ve enjoyed some good days out.

Hairy Dragonflies seem to be doing well, I’ve seen lots of these over the last month.

Scarce Chasers are now often the most common species at the sites I visit.

Norfolk Hawkers are showing well at Felmersham and have been very active through their short season.

Downy Emeralds were a regular sight for me at Willington last year; I haven’t seen any yet this time, though others have reported them.

Variable Damselflies are worth keeping an eye out for – I see these often at Felmersham and Willington, where else are they hiding?

Red‑veined Darters have already been reported at Broom; I’ve not encountered any at my usual sites yet, but I’ll be looking out for them as the season progresses.

It’s shaping up to be an interesting season, and I’d love to hear what you’re seeing out there too.

What’s turned up at your local sites?
